Centre for Migration Law again a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence for three years

Date of news: 13 November 2018

The Centre for Migration Law has again received the status of a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence for three years, effective 1 September 2018. The new Jean Monnet programme is on ‘Citizenship, migration and security in the EU’.

This year the European Commission honoured 122 of the 905 requests for Jean Monnet activities. The CMR’s proposal was awarded 96 of a possible 100 points. It is an exception for an organisation to receive this prestigious distinction twice in a row. Each university can have only one Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence. According to the European Commission, these expertise centres play a pivotal role in knowledge and skills on EU affairs. For the past three years, the Centre for Migration Law was also a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence.

In the next three years, the CMR will perform the following activities:

  • Organising a summer school on Citizenship and Migration.
  • Continuing and expanding the newsletters for judges and other legal professionals on developments in EU asylum and migration law.
  • Developing a course on European migration law for judges from the EU.
  • Monitoring the development of Guideline 2004/38 on the free movement of persons in the EU (including publications).
  • Organising seminars on the implementation of new EU migration guidelines (including publications).
