Expedition Radboud: Study Tips for First-Year Students

There are many changes when you move from secondary school to the university. Suddenly, you are expected to use Brightspace and Osiris, even though you have never even heard of them. You are also faced with a new city, different people around you, and different types of exams. You are thrown into the deep end, and it can take a moment to learn how to swim. A lot is discussed during the orientation week, but usually too much to remember. You might feel like you are missing some important information or want to learn more about the best way to structure your study programme.

To support you with that, the Nijmegen School of Management has organised workshops for all first-year students to help you have a better, more effective, and more efficient first year without missing any important information. We are pleased to offer the following workshops:

The workshops will be in Dutch or English. Depending on the attendees.

Is there something else you think we should offer, or do you have a question? If so, please feel free to contact Mark Verhaag (mark.verhaag@ru.nl).

New to the university: reviewing what’s important

A lot of things happen in those very first weeks at the university. How can you best manage them? We will address this in the “New to the university: reviewing what’s important” workshop in which topics range from better understanding the university’s systems to creating structure in your week. You will also gain more clarity about where you need to be at specific times. It will provide you with dos and don’ts to help you on your way so that you are sure you aren’t missing anything. Do you still have questions after the orientation? Not a problem! You can ask them all here.

You will participate in this workshop with other students from your own programme or faculty. This will also provide you with an opportunity to exchange experiences and ideas. You will receive a booklet with handy study tips at the end.

You will learn which ways of studying are most effective, and you can immediately put them into practice for your exam during the session. In this way, you use the time in the workshop for studying together with fellow students from your own programme. You will receive a booklet with handy study tips at the end.

A better overview and more structure in your first year

One course will assign a lot of reading, while another will require you to work in groups. You don’t want to fall behind too much when writing an essay either. You will need to call upon your planning skills at the university. How can you, as a student, do this best, so that you can also enjoy your free time? In this workshop, we will address this in depth and we will share tips for creating a better overview and more structure in your first year. You will also be given a step-by-step plan to make it easier to organise it for yourself, and there will be time in the session to immediately apply it to your own study programme with your fellow students. This means that you will have your plan ready after the session! You will also receive a booklet with handy study tips at the end.
