Dit project onderzoekt welke (socio)linguïstische factoren bepalend zijn voor de functionele implementatie van een standaardtaal, waarbij de verwachting is dat kranten een cruciale rol hebben gespeeld in de ontwikkeling van de Nederlandse standaardtaal, als het eerste massamedium dat door alle sociale klassen werd gelezen.
