Cursusdoelen

At the end of this course you will be able to:
(1) evaluate the most important theoretical perspectives on the question of numerical identity;
(2) explain how this question is related to questions about personhood, authenticity, autonomy and self-knowledge;
(3) reflect on the impact of recent scientific developments on various aspects of personal identity.

Inhoud

In this course we focus on a number of central issues surrounding the topic of personal identity. We start with the traditional question of numerical identity: what does it take for a person to remain the same person over time? From there on we explore related questions such as: What is a person? What makes me different from other persons? What does it mean to be autonomous? How do I know myself and what gives me authority over my own mind? We approach these questions from various angles - modern and contemporary philosophy, philosophy of mind, experimental psychology and social neuroscience.
