Cursusdoelen

After the course, you will have an overview of the central positions and arguments in the debate about the so-called 'death of man'; you will be able to explain these arguments in your own words and will also be able to evaluate them so as to formulate your own position in the debate.

Inhoud

During the previous century, many philosophers like Heidegger, Foucault and Derrida came to criticise the central role of the subject in modern philosophy. What does this critique entail and what do we have to think of it? We will discuss this philosophical problematic and investigate questions like: What arguments can be given against the central role of the subject (and what does this central role imply?)? Does this critique really imply that we can do or should do without a reference to the subject/subjectivity? Is there a need to preserve such a reference and what type of subject would we need for such a project?
