- you will have an overview of the central positions and arguments in the debate about the so-called death of the subject;
- you will be able to explain these philosophical theories and the main arguments in your own words and to evaluate them so as to formulate your own position in the debate.

During the previous century, many philosophers like Heidegger, Foucault and Derrida criticized the central role of the subject in modern philosophy. What does this critique entail and what do we have to think of it? Why did several philosophers (like Husserl, Sartre and Ricoeur) refuse to get rid of the concept of the subject and how did they redefine it? We will discuss this philosophical issue and investigate questions like: What arguments can be given against the central role of the subject? Does this critique really imply that we can do or should do without a reference to the subject/subjectivity? Is there a need to preserve such a reference and what type of subject would we need for such a project?
