Knowledge, Science and Society
This course provides an overview of central problems, questions, concepts and positions in the philosophy of science and epistemology, and connects them to current societal debates on, for instance, fake news, climate change, and implicit bias. The discussion of these issues is centered around the following five themes: (1) scepticism; (2) the scientific method; (3) context, values and objectivity; (4) science and pseudo-science; (5) scientific reduction. Recurring questions have to do with the validity of observations, standards of justification, and impact of biases on everyday and scientific reasoning.
