After this course you will be able to:
- sketch the main developments of classical philosophy and their importance for the entire Western philosophical tradition;
- recognize and evaluate the main topics and arguments of ancient philosophy;
- understand some important ancient philosophical texts and reproduce their positions.

This course provides a first introduction to the main philosophers and philosophies of Greek and Roman Antiquity, covering more than one millennium of philosophical activity from the sixth century BC up until the sixth century AD. In its necessarily selective meetings, we will look at some important highlights from the thought of the Presocratics, Plato, Aristotle, and the Hellenistic as well as Late Ancient schools of philosophy. The course consists of meetings that provide a lecture usually followed by a philosophical discussions of selected texts in translation.
