Aims
After the course you will be able to:
  • describe the main developments within modern philosophy;
  • characterize the thought of the main modern authors and to situate their thought in its historical context;
  • analyze the texts of some important modern philosophers.
Content
This course introduces you to the history of modern philosophy. A number of central philosophical issues (the relation between philosophy and science, the relation between body and mind, the relation between mind and world, determinism versus human freedom, the relation between individual and soiety) will be discusses on the basis of primary texts by philosophers such as Descartes, Spinoza, Berkeley, Hobbes, Hume, Leibniz, Kant, Hegel and Marx.
