Cursusdoelen
At the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • give state-of-the-art oral presentations;
  • write book reviews and survey articles in academic English;
  • present feedback to research proposals;
  • write a blog for a larger non-philosophical audience;
  • describe the general methodology of philosophy (issues such as the continental - analytical divide, and the scientific status of philosophy).
Inhoud
This year-long course, which is mandatory for all first-year Research Master students, aims to develop the following methodological, academic, and presentational skills:
  • familiarity with the specific methodological tools used in the various philosophical disciplines: awareness of methodology is trained by means of a collective reading of concise key texts, the formulation of answers to questions with respect to these, and debates about possible answers between representatives of different philosophical disciplines;
  • a broad understanding of the state of the art of the specialisation in which you are enrolled: such an understanding is acquired by each student separately, by means of research projects that will be presented to the class in the final meetings of each seminar;
  • an introduction to the art of writing academic articles and research proposals: this art is trained in meetings in which second-year Research Master students or staff members subject drafts of their articles or research proposals to the judgment of the class participants;
  • training in academic writing and in oral presentation of research results.
The first semester (FTR-FIRM-MS-01) of the course will be taught by prof. Christoph Lüthy (c.luethy@ftr.ru.nl), and the second semester (FTR-FIRM-MS-02) by dr. Cees Leijenhorst (c.leijenhorst@ftr.ru.nl).
