After having finished the course, you are familiar with the outlines of the history of the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches, from its origins in the early centuries of Christianity until today.

Inhoud

This introductory course addresses the history of Eastern Christianity in a lecture-series that takes you from the early phases when Eastern Christianity slowly took its own form vis-à-vis the Christianities of the West to its place in global contemporary society, including the west. This early phase, which was characterised by the emergence of a number of separate church hierarchies characterised not only by distinct theologies but as much by different languages and regional priorities is often included in histories of the early church and the Roman Empire and Byzantium. This course also addresses the later history, including the stabilization and extension of Middle Eastern churches in the early Islamic period, the effects of the Crusades and Mongol rule on these churches, the successful transformation into a Slavonic/Russian-based church of the Russian Empire, the survival of the churches in the Middle East under Ottoman rule, and the emergence from the early nineteenth century onwards of national churches in the Balkans and Greek, Syriac, Armenian and Coptic minority churches in the Middle East.
