Aims

Na afloop van de cursus heb je:

  • kennis over enkele van de voornaamste religieuze tradities uit de oudheid en inzicht in de manier waarop deze zich in de loop der eeuwen hebben ontwikkeld;
  • inzicht in de rol die religie speelde in de prechristelijke mediterrane wereld;
  • inzicht in de methoden en materialen die ons bij de bestudering van zogenoemde niet-levende godsdiensten ter beschikking staan.
Content
In this course we study several of the most important ancient religions in the ancient Mediterranean and the ancient Near East from 3000 BCE till 325 AD. The focus is on three regions: Egypt, Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq) and the classical world (Greece and Rome). We focus on the way these religions developed over time and how they influenced each other. In studying these cults we use ancient literary sources (in translation),but also material remains (such as temples, inscriptions and cult statues) and study religion in its social and cultural context. Topics that will be discussed are, for example, myths and sacred narratives, religious practices and rituals and ideas on death and the hereafter. A recurrent theme are the similarities and differences between various religions - both geographically and over the course of time. This holds true in particular for cults from the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
