Cursusdoelen

You will gain knowledge of and insight in:
1) the relationship between art and religion;
2) the different ways in which religion is imagined and contested by means of art;
3) how to study religion through art (form and context).

Inhoud

Art can be used to convey a religious message and to create a sense of belonging. Art can also be employed to challenge religious ideas or it can transgress religious sensibilities, with subsequent accusations of heresy and blasphemy. In this course students learn about the relationship between art and various religious traditions, especially Christianity, Islam and indigenous religions. The premise of this course is that art is not just a matter of aesthetics and taste, but is embedded in cultural and historical relations. The course is organized around four central themes: imagination, connection, wonder and resistance. All four denote a specific function of art in relation to religion.
