Upon completion of this course, you will:
- have a strong understanding of the place of Scripture within Orthodox Christianity
- be able to interpret the Scriptures within the tradition of Orthodox Christianity
- be able to relate what has been learnt to developments in Western Scriptural scholarship

This course introduces students to the books of Scripture, addressing issues related to their collection as Scripture, the question of “canon,” their translation into Greek (the Septuagint), and their interpretation as understood by the early Christian tradition and the Orthodox tradition thereafter, in both its liturgical and theological dimensions. This course will also explore how what is found in the Orthodox tradition relates to trends in Western scriptural scholarship, asking both what we might learn from such exegesis as well as what critique or correction a traditional, patristic approach might offer.
