You'll both deepen and broaden your knowledge of the religions and cultures that have developed along the Silk Road. The Silk Road was not just a trade route, but also a conduit for the distribution of ideas and religious from east to west and vice versa. You'll develop insight into the most signficant interactions between Asia and the West.

This course introduces the student to a range of different forms of interaction between the various peoples and cultures along the Silk Road. The term 'Silk Road' is used in a broad sense: we'll discuss not just the trade in silk, but also y the historical and religious developments in this area of the world. We'll consider the origins of the trade routes, the distribution of Christianity and Judaism from the Middle East all the way to China; Buddhism will also be discussed extensively, in addition to the political interactions of the various peoples from Central Asia to the West. Classes will focus on specific case studies, but we'll also consider the connection between the various topics in order to develop a thorough understanding of the various developments that transpired along this route.
