Inhoud
An introduction to classic debates in Christian Doctrine

Becoming fluent in a religious tradition involves learning about the content of that religious tradition. Societies need well-trained and well-informed citizens (and teachers) who can communicate beyond religious stereotypes, explain theological expressions and locate them in their historical diversity, and show how they can adapt to different contexts. From a global perspective, studying the content of the Christian faith and how that faith came to be formulated throughout history offers a valuable perspective on more than 30% of the world’s population.

Dogmatics is a field within the academic study of Christian Theology that explores the doctrinal content of the Christian faith to illuminate its place and enduring relevance in society. In this class, students will be introduced to what many Christians believe and practice, which has developed globally over millennia in connection with the questions and insights of believers confronting the pressing issues of their time.

By thinking about how Christian beliefs have developed over time to confront new issues, Dogmatics is in dialogue with the wider context and culture in which Christians profess their faith. This class introduces the key doctrinal content of the Christian faith and its vision for human flourishing to assess whether and how it can still be formulated in a pluralistic society. The practices and beliefs of the Catholic tradition receive special attention, such as Trinity, Creation, Jesus Christ, Church, Sacraments, Salvation, Resurrection, and The End of Time.
