Aims
At the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • paraphrase Greek texts of an intermediary level;
  • read texts (with the use of aids, such as Bauer’s New Testament lexicon) from the New Testament in ancient Greek;
  • recognize vocabulary, morphology, syntax and the basic characteristics of New Testament Greek.
Content

In this course, a follow-up of the BA2 Greek I course, the central focus shifts from studying the basics of Greek to the actual reading of the source texts. This means that grammar, syntax and vocabulary will concentrate on the texts studied, and will not be treated extensively as a means in itself. The selection of texts, based on relevance, accessibility, and variety, will include different text types to familiarize the student with the breadth and nature of the Greek source texts.

Test information
Presentation and brief written paper based on the presentation (30%). Final exam after period 2 (70%).

Prerequisites
This seminar is open only to students who have successfully passed the Greek I course, or an equivalent course on the same level (e.g. Greek at VWO level). Foreign students should consult the instructor before the start of the course. Students are expected to have basic knowledge of modern grammar and its terminology, including parts of speech. Issues of grammar will be treated and repeated in class, but only as occasioned by problems encountered in reading and translating the Greek texts.
