Insight in Foucault's project of the hermeutics of the self as a hermeneutics of Christianity; insight in the complex relation between philosophical and Christian practices of the self (ascesis) and models for subjectivity.
Inhoud
What is the relation between philosophy, Christianity and the emergence of Western forms of subjectivity? In this seminar we will read and explore texts in which Christianity is associated with institutions, practices and techniques that shape and transform man's inner life and the relation to one's body. In this course key texts from (the late) Foucault on the hermeneutics of the self and ascesis will be central, but also some texts of other authors that connect to Foucault's approach will be explored - Nietzsche, De Certeau, Hadot and Agamben.
