Departing from the work of Schleiermacher, through the analysis of the holy in Otto, a specific philosophical analysis of religion has been developed known as the phenomenology of religion. In this course, we'll discuss what the phenomenology of religion is, where it comes from and how it is taken up in strands of phenomenology and hermeneutics in contemporary continental philosophy, especially Heidegger and Ricoeur. Specific attention is given to the phenomenon of the holy and the hermeneutics of the symbol.
