Despite the decline of church membership in Western Europe and elsewhere, many of us still seek a personal spiritual path. The Christian tradition offers rich resources in spiritual guidance and formation that can be used individually or to revitalize congregations and parish life. In this specialization tutorial, students will examine the topic of spiritual guidance and formation in the Christian tradition to identify the resources for spiritual accompaniment amid a variety of spiritual traditions within Christianity. This can take many forms, including traditional spiritual direction, spiritual friendship, spiritual reading and exchange, and small group spiritual guidance. All these practices may build up and nourish the life of a community or parish and thus reinforce communal spiritual life.
During this tutorial, students will independently study several examples of spiritual guidance in the Bible and in history to sketch an appropriate framework for contemporary models of spiritual guidance. |
