The course includes the following learning objectives:
- To develop knowledge and understanding of environmental and climate law as specialised sub-fields of international and EU law;
- To identify and be able to reflect critically on key debates around the nature, history and politics of environmental law at international and European level;
- To explain and critically analyse current legal debates about specific issues concerning the environment, sustainability and climate (e.g. the rights of nature, ecocide);
- To acquire knowledge and reflect on the interaction between different legal regimes, such as international law, EU law and national law in relation to the environment, sustainability and climate change;
- To develop a doctrinal understanding and capacity for legal analysis and application of law in relation to the main contemporary challenges in the implementation of environmental law and in the fight against climate change;
- To develop an understanding of current legal practice in relation to the enforcement of the law in the areas mentioned above;
- To develop oral and written skills, including legal reasoning and argumentation, analytical skills, legal and academic writing, debating and presentation skills.

The course offers an insight into the origins and evolution of International and European Environmental and Sustainability Law. It engages with the history, sources and principles of International Environmental Law in a critical manner. Particular attention will be directed to such topical issues as the rights of the nature with reference to leading cases, and the recognition of ecocide as a crime under international law. Within the context of wider international law, the course delves into various aspects of EU environmental law focusing on key pieces of EU environmental acquis, enforcement of environmental legislation and the legal aspects of the EU Green Deal. In addition, the course will address the role of environment and sustainability in EU external relations.

DUTCH STUDENTS: Students with at least 6 EC in International and European Law related subjects in their previous Bachelor studies, which includes students who have obtained a Bachelor degree in Rechtsgeleerdheid/Notarieel recht and European Law School.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS:
- International Master students who have passed Advanced Notions of International and European Law with 6 EC.
- Erasmus students, including advanced Bachelor students who have already obtained at least 160 EC in their Bachelor studies, and Erasmus Master students.

The assessment in this course includes a written assignment (15%) and a written exam (85%).

This course forms part of the curriculum of the Master International and European Law, notably the specialisation of International and European Law Advanced. It is also representative of Radboud University’s quest for incorporating sustainable development into our research-led curriculum.
The course develops the knowledge acquired by the students at Bachelor level in such subjects as Inleiding Internationaal Recht (B1), Various Branches of International Law and Harmonisation in the EU (B3). The course compliments the following Master courses:
