Aims
After completing the course, students are able to:
  • situate works of art in their historical context;
  • describe and characterize individual works of art on four levels: the artistic (works of art, stylistic characteristics and techniques); the mental (world view and ideology); the societal (politics and society); the economic (technology and the economy);
  • analyze the interaction between works from different art disciplines from the period under scrutiny, from the perspective of a theme relevant to that period (e.g. “democratization”, “subjectivity”, “secularization”)
  • write individual reports and give group presentations
Content
This chronologically as well as thematically structured course focuses on the history of the Western arts from Classical antiquity to the Renaissance. Students will reflect on the place works of art in their cultural and historical contexts; they will examine how works of art from different art disciplines were shaped by these contexts and how art disciplines interacted within a particular period or art movement. Thus, students will study the historical development of literature, music, theatre, visual art and architecture, paying special attention to the intertextual and intermedial relations between specific works of art. Throughout, they will apply and further develop their analytical skills in their description and explanation of works of art as products of the artistic, mental, societal and economic conditions of their time.
