It is almost impossible to communicate about art without analysis. Analysis reveals the parts of an art object with the help of a general frame of critical concepts. This takes practice and careful consideration, because not every general concept can be applied to one specific work of art. The peculiarities you will discover in the analysis of a work will serve as the tools in its interpretation.
Text: you will investigate the structure of both prose (Amsterdam) and poetry (The Bees). Which forms of repetition and imagery can be found in literary texts? Which roles can narrators play in stories? These and other questions constitute points of departure for the exact analytical readings of texts. As will be shown, literary techniques also play an important role in a variety of texts like advertisements and pop lyrics.
Music: you will be introduced to the fundamental elements of music theory such as musical notation, time, intervals, scales and chords. Next to that, you will learn to literally use your ears and think anew about music. You will investigate how musical effects are achieved and how they may influence listeners. A variety of musical fragments will be analysed in the process.
Image: on the basis of the Film Art book, you will learn to analyse elements of images like narrative structure, mise-en-scène, camera movement, sound and montage. The emphasis in this course will be on feature films, but all of the elements dealt with also occur in other forms of visual art such as paintings, documentaries or pop videos. |
