Music is a cultural activities that relies on technology. Whether it is using sticks and stones to produce sounds or creating musical compositions with the aid of a computer, music has always been technological. Contemporary musical practices are shaped by (digital) technology in particular, whether it is listening to, composing or performing music. As a result, in order to understand the role and function of music in contemporary culture, a focus on the role of technology is indispensable.
In this course the relationship between music and technology will be discussed. The following topics will be covered:
- Music as recording;
- The digitisation of music;
- Listening to music in the Internet age;
- Performing digital music;
- DJ Culture;
- Sampling.
