Aims
After completion of this course the student will be able to:
  • Recognise the role technology plays in contemporary music culture;
  • Analyse the function of technology in musical practices;
  • Reflect on the different views on the relationship between music and technology;
  • Engage in productive discussions regarding the role technology plays in contemporary music culture.
Content

Music is a cultural activities that relies on technology. Whether it is using sticks and stones to produce sounds or creating musical compositions with the aid of a computer, music has always been technological. Contemporary musical practices are shaped by (digital) technology in particular, whether it is listening to, composing or performing music. As a result, in order to understand the role and function of music in contemporary culture, a focus on the role of technology is indispensable.

In this course the relationship between music and technology will be discussed. The following topics will be covered:

  1. Music as recording;
  2. The digitisation of music;
  3. Listening to music in the Internet age;
  4. Performing digital music;
  5. DJ Culture;
  6. Sampling.
