Aims
In this course students will develop specific skills to:
  • observe, analyse, and interpret developments within the music industry using qualitative research methods;
  • explore and develop initiatives pertaining to the music industry.
Content
This course will focus on recent developments in the music industry, such as digitisation, Do It Yourself culture, and copyright issues. These developments may be relevant for many practices within the creative industries, but they resulted in drastic changes in the music industry in particular. As a consequence, an examination of how these developments manifest themselves in the music industry may teach us not only about music and its industry, but about the manners in which the creative industries in general are developing as well.

The course will examine the process from coming up with a musical idea to the distribution and promotion of the final musical product. In addition, the fundamentals of qualitative research will be discussed. With the knowledge gained from both of these explorations students will develop an idea for a music project, which will be based on qualitative research performed by the students themselves.

The course will be presented through online lectures, which will consist of a combination of text, audio and video, including a number of documentaries that address different aspects of the music industry. The “live” sessions will mainly revolve around issues introduced by students themselves, and are intended to help the students prepare their final project. In order to stimulate students to provide input, for each session an assignment needs to be made.
