Aims
At the end of part 1 of the course the student can:
  • Name, interpret, explain, and apply the following skills in the area of academic writing: critically integrating sources, referencing, paraphrasing, citing and quoting sources; using internal and external text structures, using an academic style and appropriate language, and critically reflecting on academic texts;
  • Apply the rules of spelling, grammar and punctuation governing the English language and will be sufficiently familiar with academic vocabulary, reading, logic and argumentation in an academic context;
  • Find and select relevant sources about a theme in the field of communication and information studies;
At the end of part 2 of the course the student can:
  • Apply the knowledge gained in part 1 when drafting academic texts following the phases in the writing process ;
  • Interpret and integrate relevant sources, with a critical perspective, into a coherent introduction in such a way that a research question or hypothesis can be deduced;
  • Write an introduction according to the guidelines for academic language use and APA referencing style.
Content
The focus in the Academic Skills course is on developing skills in the areas of critical information processing, and writing academic texts. In this course, students will be guided through the phases of the writing process. Attention will be paid to searching and selecting sources, taking a critical attitude to sources, and integrating these sources. Students will learn how to reference, paraphrase, cite and quote sources, and how to achieve coherence in texts. Students will also learn what the characteristics are of an academic writing style and how to apply these correctly in practice. Moreover, students will practise reflecting critically on their own and other people’s texts.

Mentoring
Part of this course will be devoted to academic mentoring; students receive guidance on the process of acquiring academic skills through extra lectures, seminars, and tutorials.
