Aims
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
  • Describe and analyse communication from the perspective of different linguistic disciplines such as phonology and pragmatics;
  • Review how language choices influence the success of communication.
  • Formulate a research idea based on the topics taught in this course.
Content
Language is a complex system that involves a number of different linguistic processes. Successful communication is subject to these different processes; it may depend on the correct pronunciation or grammar, the use of the relevant vocabulary, but also the use of appropriate conventions in different contexts. The description and analysis of communication at various levels involve a basic knowledge of these linguistic processes, their theoretical backgrounds and the terminology to describe them. In this course, students will study the different linguistic processes of the language system at different levels, such as the sound, word, sentence, text or discourse. The course provides student with the tools to be able to describe language and communication and analyse the way in which language works in different communicative situations. Based on the knowledge acquired in this lecture, students develop research ideas for the different areas of linguistics discusses. One of these research ideas will be used in the second semester course on Research Methodology as research assignment.
