At the end of this course, the student will be capable of:
- Applying central concepts of discourse and conversation analysis
- Describing and explaining interactional phenomena in institutional environments
- Analyzing fragments of (mediated) interaction in institutional settings using models/theories in the field of language use
- Independently transcribing a spoken conversation according to conversation analytical conventions

A large part of organizations’ communication consists of (spoken) interaction with clients, patients, citizen and colleagues for instance on the phone, face-to-face or via chat/messaging. This course teaches students about studies of and characteristics of spoken and mediated interaction in institutional and organizational contexts such as the police, health and “the workplace”. Concepts that will be addressed include (speech) acts/ actions, adjacency pairs, preference, conversational implicature, politeness and “face”. Students will be taught to analyze data fragments using these concepts. In addition, students will learn to transcribe a conversation according to the current conversation analytical conventions. This course will provide insights in the important but complex relationship between interaction and context and in how fascinating it is to study this relationship.
