Content
A large part of organizations’ communication consists of (spoken) interaction with clients, patients, citizen and colleagues for instance on the phone, face-to-face or via chat/messaging. This course teaches students about studies of and characteristics of spoken and mediated interaction in institutional and organizational contexts such as the police, health and “the workplace”. Concepts that will be addressed include (speech) acts/ actions, adjacency pairs, preference, conversational implicature, politeness and “face”. Students will be taught to analyze data fragments using these concepts. In addition, students will learn to transcribe a conversation according to the current conversation analytical conventions.
