Although the role of English as a lingua franca in business contexts is undisputed, IBC research has shown that the use of English can cause problems for professionals who do not speak English as their mother tongue. When non-native speakers (non-native speakers) communicate in English, their English will differ from native speakers. The question is to what extent this different language use may cause communication problems.
In this course, you will study the theory and methodology of research in the field of non-nativeness in international business communication on the basis of English articles. You will analyse the articles and ask critical questions about them. You will carry out SPSS assignments in which you analyse sample data. You will report on a small-scale experimental study into the effect of an aspect of non-nativeness. During the course you will (individually) work on analysing data and writing the different sections of an English research paper about the experimental study, resulting in a full-fledged English research paper at the end of the course.
