Aims
This course aims to achieve the following learning goals. At the end of the course, students will be able to:
  1. Describe and explain the concept of ‘diversity’ in terms of cultural differences and linguistic variation;
  2. Identify in what ways communication (verbal and non-verbal, written and spoken, online and offline) can involve diversity;
  3. Reflect on scientific theories of diversity and apply them to a real-life case of diversity in communication in an organisational context.
In addition, an important goal of this course is for students to gain experience working and communicating in groups of a diverse nature.
Content
This course focuses on the factors that play a role in the perception and interpretation of communication by diverse (e.g. linguistically and culturally) international audiences. It considers how diversity may be taken into account in creating effective international communication, both interpersonal and in organisations. By studying academic research articles and case study reports, you will develop insights into how diversity impacts communication in international contexts
