In this seminar, you will expand your knowledge of American cultural studies by looking at how American media, in particular film but also art, photography, television and literature, have shaped representations of race, class, gender, and sexuality. We will investigate frameworks for studying media and analyze case studies in visual arts. Each session will feature specific theoretical concepts including film genre, cultural studies, Orientalism, the “male gaze”, feminism, queer theory, etc. We will address theories of communication and signs, historical media developments, the language of media literacy, and developments of modern technological media from photography via film to hypermedia in the digital age. Secondary texts will introduce a full range of theoretical perspectives through which American cultural studies, theories, and media may be explored, analyzed, critiqued, and understood in a transnational context. |
