Aims
At the end of the course, the student:
  • has developed an understanding of the great cultural diversity of the American culture;
  • has developed an appreciation for the issues and dilemmas at stake in a multicultural society;
  • can recognize and explain the various theories and debates surrounding cultural diversity in North America;
  • can apply theoretical knowledge as well as close-reading skills to the analysis of various representations of diversity and identity in North American contemporary literature, art and popular culture.
Content
This course gives students the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and understanding of problems surrounding cultural diversity and (national) identity which have been publicly debated in North America since the 1980s but which continue to highly relevant today. Next to studying theories of North American multiculturalism, cultural diversity, race and identity, students will analyze diverse art forms in which diversity and identity have been negotiated politically, culturally and aesthetically. Primary materials will be drawn from various realms, including photography, visual art and popular culture, with an emphasis on literature.
