At the end of the course, the student

  • has an understanding of the parts of speech and English morphology
  • understands phrase, clause and sentence structures in English
  • recognises the major differences in usage between English and Dutch
  • is able to point to usage errors in English texts produced by Dutch learners
  • is aware of the English writing conventions, including correct spelling and punctuation
  • is able to translate a relatively simple Dutch text into English avoiding major errors
  • can make adequate use of bilingual and monolingual dictionaries and electronic reference material.
Content
The course English Linguistics: Theory and Practice constitutes a general introduction to linguistic theory combined with practical application of the theory by developing translation skills: focus is on understanding the basic structure of English and the contrastive usage rules of English and Dutch grammar. Discussion and exploration of theoretical linguistics aspects are coupled with practical grammar and translation assignments.
Translation is an excellent way of gaining a deeper understanding of the structure of English and English usage rules, and it offers students an opportunity to expand their vocabulary on the basis of the consultation of dictionaries and electronic databases and other reference material.
