Aims
After completing this course:
• You will be able to place the texts studied within their contemporary cultural contexts;
• You will possess an overview of the main literary trends and movements of the nineteenth and twentieth century (such as Romanticism and Modernism);
• You will be able to identify some of the period’s most significant literary genres, ranging from the realist novel to postmodern drama;
• You will be able to critically analyse a range of literary texts from different periods, and apply various theoretical perspectives, such as feminism and postcolonialism, to your reading of them.
Content
The aim of this course is to introduce you to English literature and culture from the early nineteenth century up to the present day. We will study a wide range of different sorts of texts, including short stories, novels, plays and poetry, alongside material relating to the contemporary cultural context, such as paintings, photographs and music.
Assumed previous knowledge
Note for exchange students: you cannot take this course if your English proficiency level is not at least C1 (TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC or Cambridge). A statement from your home university won't be accepted.
