At the end of the course, the student
• recognises the main translation problems in Dutch and English texts;
• can critically evaluate reference materials, such as (electronic) dictionaries;
• can translate texts from English into Dutch and vice versa, and edit translated texts, under the supervision of a professional translator.
Note: Students who take the elective translation course can also choose to do a 10 EC translation internment (see Vertaalstage).

The course gives the student the opportunity to practise his or her translation skills at advanced level. The student is confronted with authentic English or Dutch source material that is to be translated into the other language. These texts have not been simplified. The course specifically deals with register and idioms. Background information about translation studies and general translation theory is provided.
