Aims

Upon completion of this course, you are able to:

  • apply your knowledge and insight in notable themes in the field of European comparative history, ranging from Ancient times until today;
  • have insight in the academic reflection by historians on the comparative approach;
  • reflect on historical comparisons, in a written review of a comparative study
Content
This course familiarises you with comparative approaches in the historical sciences. You will discuss overarching themes in European history, which have turned out to be exemplary for comparisons across time and space. Examples of these themes are identity formation, the creation of socio-cultural, economic and political frontiers, facts and fiction in theories of European exceptionalism, or crisis management in Europe’s multifarious past. You will learn to analyse and reflect on how historians make comparisons in order to gain insight in the potential advantages and disadvantages of comparative approaches.
