Content
In this course we reflect on the relationship between art and its (historical and/or contemporary) context. We consider and critically question the construction of such a relationship from various theoretical and methodological angles, always raising the central question whether and how it is possible to analyse and explain art from the perspective of its socio-economic, political and/or cultural contexts. Students and lecturers will engage in active debate, drawing on various articles and chapters from recent publications in the field. Students will also investigate and present case-studies from their own individual field of specialisation, building on acquired theoretical and methodological knowledge and understanding and implementing these in their own research design. They will select a case-study, conduct independent research, present their results to their peers (orally and in writing) and offer a critical reflection on the work of their peers.
