2022-2023: Contemporary Art and Memory
How can art shape our memory of conflict, help us heal, and define a path forward? In recent years, contemporary artists across the world have developed a vast array of approaches to the work of memory. Against the erasures of colonization, the violence of repressive regimes, and the trauma of civil war, they have deployed new articulations of performance, photography, video, and installation. They have energized emerging forms, such as the reenactment, the lecture performance, and digital modeling. In the era of rising disinformation, they have explored the role of truth as well as fiction in facilitating the processes of justice and repair. In this course, we will examine key strategies contemporary artists have utilized to question and construct our collective memory, with particular emphasis on artworks attending to marginalized histories.
