Inhoud
This MA course offers an introduction to the comparative study of literature as it is practised within the MA Literary Studies programme "European Literature". In order to reflect on as well as to problematise the notion of a shared European literary heritage, it will acquaint students with topical debates as well as current research in the field of comparative literature, especially as it relates to the course's two main themes: cosmopolitanism and intertextuality. The overarching question is the relation between literature and (European) identity in the context of changing political and cultural relations between European nations, which has become increasingly relevant in light of the rise of various forms of globalisation.

In the first period, the course’s two lecturers will show how cosmopolitanism and intertextuality can provide a framework for the interpretation of works of fiction in their broader cultural context. In the second period, students will develop a case study that ties in with one of the two main themes and prepare, execute and present their own research in so-called expert groups. They will develop a research plan, discuss their progress, give a talk about their project, and present their  results in an academic paper. Students will also participate in a workshop with students of the Creative Writing programme of ArtEZ, in which they will be offered the opportunity to collaborate with creative writers and, thus, explore how theory and practice may benefit from interaction.

While the working language in class is English, students’ reading reports and essays may be submitted in English, Dutch, or German.
