At the end of the course, the student
• has acquired an awareness of the role of literary texts in the production and remediation of memory;
• is acquainted with key literary representations of slavery across time and in various transnational cultural contexts;
• can describe the most important debates and concepts within the fields of memory, (post)colonial and trauma studies;
• can apply these concepts, as well as relevant narratological concepts, to a literary representation of slavery of their own choice;
• can present a historically and theoretically contextualized analysis of a literary text, in both oral and written form.

This seminar will explore fictional representations of slavery, in the Americas and Europe, from the early nineteenth century to the present. During this period, after slavery’s first abolition in the slipstream of the French and Haitian revolutions (1793), political discourse on slavery shifted attention from the slave trade (as an objective, commercial reality) to the lived experiences of the enslaved (as subjective, mediated experience). Embodying the realities of enslavement, figures such as Frederick Douglass came to the fore, using literary strategies and fictionalized representations to shape new discourses on slavery. Narrative fiction especially, which assigned a central role to subjective memory and its various embodiments, played a key role. We will tease out the entangled, multidirectional nature of these memories of slavery, their various displacements – temporal, geographic, political – and the detours and narrative strategies deployed to express the horrors of slavery, in some cases making even silence and absence speak.
