In your minor, you will use your knowledge and skills to research key contemporary issues related to gender and other forms of diversity as raised in the Dutch National Research Agenda. This theme course is an introduction to the theme of the minor with the aim of laying a theoretical foundation, which you will then use in the course Academia and Society and the think tank.
Differences are made. How and when does difference become inequality? And what's the problem with that? In this theme course, you will become acquainted with core concepts around gender and other forms of diversity, such as normalisation, inclusion and exclusion, difference vs (in)equality, and intersectionality. We focus on the role of language and images in producing differences to equip you with the academic knowledge (cultural, historical, gender studies, linguistics & communication studies) requisite to discuss these social-cultural issues. At the end of the course you will be able to define the key concepts, express the issues independently, and elucidate them with concrete examples. Historiography, communication, and representation are central here. On the basis of 'case studies' and in multidisciplinary teams you will learn to formulate theoretically grounded, evidence-based approaches to (gender) diversity and inclusiveness issues and how to make them researchable.
