In your minor, you will use your knowledge and skills to research key contemporary issues raised in the Dutch National Research Agenda. This theme course is an introduction to the theme of the minor with the aim of laying a theoretical foundation, which you will then use in the Academia and Society course and the think tank.
This theme course focuses on the social dynamics of literature, following two paths in particular. First, we will look at the role and position of literature in society: how is it consumed, what are the media of literature and what are the main institutions that constitute the literary field? Second, we will discuss the place of society in literature: how do social, cultural and political developments recur in literature, and to what extent does literature itself become an active part of these developments? In this second part, we will concentrate on, among other things, the emerging discipline of ecocriticism, and on the role of literature in shaping cultural memory.
In both parts of the course, we will study literature from a diachronic perspective, taking our examples from the rich history of European literature from antiquity to the present day.
