At the end of this course

  • students will able to independently plan and write a paper;
  • student will be able to apply the stylistic, linguistic and structural writing conventions of their field;
  • students will be able to provide constructive feedback on work of their peers;
  • students will be aware of their strengths and weaknesses in their writing and will be able to locate additional resources that may help them to continue to improve their writing skills;
  • students will be more confident about their writing skills and more likely to enjoy the writing process.
Content
During this course, students will be writing a paper (for the Term Paper course - LET-REMA-LC1404 - or one of the elective courses they are taking) that convinces the reader of the importance of their work and is appropriate both in language and style. Students will start by familiarizing themselves with the specific task and relevant genre (e.g. literature review or research paper) and learn the skills to structure their own ideas and to outline your text. In the following sessions, they will develop their general writing skills listed below. In groups, students will provide feedback on their individual texts and do interactive learning tasks that are based on recent texts published in their field. The teacher will give students individual feedback on different drafts of their work.
  • Paragraphing and cohesion
  • Sentence structure and punctuation
  • Academic style
  • Readability
Peer and instructor feedback, in-class and homework tasks based on extracts from articles in the field.
