Aims
When students have finished this course they are able to:
  • evaluate research reports that make use of statistical analyses;
  • perform basic statistical analyses by means of the program SPSS on various quantitative data;
  • calculate some basic statistics (Mean, SD, SE, T-tests, confidence intervals, Cronbach’s alpha);
  • report their empirical results according to scientific conventions (APA).
Content
The course offers a mixture of research methodology, research design and statistical data analysis. Students taking this course will learn to perform basic statistical tests on empirical data, gathered by means of language experiments or surveys. In addition, students will learn how to use the statistical package SPSS.

Topics: Descriptive statistics (measurement level; frequencies; mean, median, mode, standard deviation and variance; histograms; bar chart; contingency tables) and inferential statistics (Central Limit Theorem; hypothesis testing; confidence intervals; testing assumptions; probability; independent-samples and paired-samples t-tests, Cronbach’s alpha).
Level

Presumed foreknowledge
This course is mandatory for students whose knowledge of statistics was deemed insufficient upon admission to the programme.
