An understanding of the degree to which text (either written or spoken) can be processed automatically and of the purposes for which this processing can be used. A basic insight in the various techniques that can be applied and the ability to select the proper technique(s) in any given situation. Sufficient understanding to follow up on this selection by finding and obtaining available software, judging its appropriateness, and take steps to adjust or extend the software when needed (note that this does not imply the students’ ability to implement such adjustments/extensions themselves).

On the basis of the seminal handbook Speech and Language Processing by Jurafsky and Martin, we examine the various linguistic levels that are being processed automatically (e.g. speech or syntax), the information that can be derived from that processing (e.g. for purposes of information retrieval or text correction), and the techniques that are used for the actual processing (e.g. finite state machines or Hidden Markov Models).
You will work through selected chapters from the handbook, including exercises. In selected cases, you will obtain hands-on experience with available systems and/or techniques. |
