Aims
  • Students are capable of finding and interpreting recent literature on the contextual approach of works of art through history.
  • They possess heuristic skills at an advanced level and are aware of the most recent developments in the field of contextual art-historical and archaeological research.
  • They are able to conduct independent research, present their research results both orally and in writing in accordance with academic standards, and review the work of their peers. (Qualifications 1-7)
Content

In this course we reflect on the relationship between art and the past and consider this relationship from various angles, including the interpretation of the past in visual culture throughout history and the use of art as a historical source. Students will study and discuss these topics by drawing on various articles and chapters from recent publications in the field. They will also investigate and present case-studies from their own individual field of specialisation from this perspective. They will select one case-study, conduct independent research, present their results to their peers (orally and in writing) and offer a critical reflection on the work of their peers.
