Aims
At the end of the course students will be able to:
  • define the concept interlanguage;
  • distinguish between and name different interlanguage phenomena;
  • exemplify the concept with relevant examples from the perspective of German as a foreign language;
  • appraise the role of interlanguage within the subject area of second and foreign language learning;
  • formulate relevant research questions related to the development and manifestation of interlanguage by Dutch learners of German;
  • conduct an analysis of authentic examples of Dutch-German interlanguage;
  • interpret the findings from this interlanguage analysis;
  • report on these findings in adequate academic German.
Content
In this course students will be introduced to the concept of interlanguage in second and foreign language learning. In the first view weeks, the theoretical debate on the role of interlanguage in the study of second and foreign language learning will be reviewed and interrelated concepts, such as transfer, formulaic language, universal developmental patterns and other factors affecting the development of learner language will be discussed. While this debate essentially retraces universal aspects of second and foreign language acquisition, exemplification of phenomena will be based on the language pair Dutch-German, thus, allowing us to focus our discussion on the specificities of this particular language combination and the resulting interlanguage phenomena.  In the second part of the course, students will learn how to formulate research questions related to the development of Dutch-German interlanguage und how to analyze authentic examples of it. Students will conduct their own interlanguage study and report on their findings in a short research report.

Note for exchange students: you cannot take this course if your German proficiency level is not at least B2.
