Aims
When you have finished this course you are able to:
  • Evaluate research reports that make use of statistical analyses;
  • Perform basic statistical analyses by means of the program SPSS on various quantitative data;
  • Calculate manually some basic statistics (Mean, SD, SE, T-tests, confidence intervals);
  • Report your empirical results according scientific conventions (APA).
Content
Some profiles in the Master program in Linguistics require skills in statistical analysis and quantitative research methodology. Research methodology and statistics are incorporated in the Nijmegen BA program in linguistics, but students with a different background might need some additional tutoring in these areas. Master students taking this course will be able to design research adequately, evaluate basic properties of measurements and perform basic statistic tests on empirical data, gathered by means of language experiments or surveys. In addition, students will be able to use the statistical package SPSS.
Topics: Research design, Measurement, Descriptive statistics (measurement level; frequencies; mean, median, mode, standard deviation and variance; histograms; bar chart; contingency tables) and inferential statistics (hypothesis testing; confidence intervals; probability; independent-samples and paired-samples t-tests; correlation; categorical data analysis).
