Aims
In this course we will cover the basics of experimental design and statistical analysis as applicable to linguistics. The course is at the entry level in order to make sure that all students will have a firm basic understanding of statistics at the end of the course. For students who already took statistics classes this may mean that there will be some overlap between this course and their previous courses. We will cover descriptive statistics, the theory of null hypothesis testing, T-test, and some other statistical techniques. The main aim is for students to get an understanding on the conceptual background of statistics and to see how experimental design and statistical analysis are related to each other.
Content
Statistics and quantitative research methodology are important aspects of the Linguistics master. Research methodology and statistics are incorporated in the Nijmegen BA program in linguistics, but students with a different background might need some additional tutoring in these areas.
Master students taking this course will be able to design research adequately, evaluate basic properties of measurements and perform basic statistic tests on empirical data, gathered by means of language experiments or surveys.
We will cover the basics of statistical background, its (often confusing) terminology, and standard statistical tests. Example tests are T-test, Chi square test, correlation, and linear regression. After this course you will be confident in understanding and using statistical measures and tests. Each week there will be a theory-oriented lecture and a hands-on practice session.

Software
JASP is an easy-to-use spreadsheet program for doing statistics. It includes all the techniques and tests that we need for this course and produces easy to understand output. JASP comes as freeware, and can be downloaded here:
